This collection of Lunar New Year recipes and short stories is aptly named “Ăn Tết,” a Vietnamese expression that translates to “eating the New Year.” Designed for jewelry brand Abacus Row’s Lunar New Year concept shop, the zine was sold both in-store and online as a fundraiser for San Francisco’s Chinatown Community Development Center.
The zine compiles recipes, photos, illustrations, and stories from 21 contributors in an easy-to-navigate layout design. Text-heavy recipes are balanced with large photos and illustrations, while the simple composition and subdued Lunar New Year color palette keep to the refined and understated brand aesthetic of Abacus Row. Celebrating the New Year through food and family memories, the cover design is inspired by the banana leaves that wrap bánh chưng/bánh tét, a Vietnamese sticky rice cake typically eaten at Lunar New Year gatherings.
